Increasing prices is one of the easiest and quickest ways to increase revenue and profit. The results can be pretty much immediate. You put your prices up today and you get more money tomorrow.
Yet, the problem is…everyone is CUTTING prices. All carpet cleaners seem to think they must be cheaper than their competitors to succeed.

Yet, this is nothing new.
I remember attending a course in the 1980’s about marketing a carpet cleaning business. Until that time I didn’t even realise that I needed to market my business. I assumed that if I was good enough at my job, people would be forming a queue outside my door.
What prompted it was the appearance of a competitor in the next road to where I lived with his van boldly sign-written with an offer of Lounge, Dining Room, Hall, Stairs & Landing AND a three-piece suite for considerably less than what I was charging for the suite alone.
I remember being convinced that my business was finished. So I learned about marketing and pricing out of desperation.
I learned that in EVERY industry there are price points. Some budget, some premium, some in-between.
For example, did you know that here in the UK you can buy a smartphone on Amazon for a small fraction of the cost of an iPhone right now? So why then, are people waiting in line every time a new iPhone is released and paying 20-30 times more!
The answer is that in every market there are price shoppers looking for the cheapest and there are premium buyers who will pay much, much more… even for carpet cleaning.
How often on cleaning forums do you see the question…. “How much should I charge for carpet cleaning? What is the ‘right’ price’?” This is what has been called ‘marketing incest’ where every cleaner looks at everyone else and does what they do and just like real incest ends up pretty stupid.
The competitor I referred to earlier went out of business long ago. He simply wasn’t charging enough. But he has been replaced by dozens like him who have also gone out of business. Many, many carpet cleaners are right now slowing going broke…they just don’t realise it yet.
Well, if you want to get more money cleaning carpets, there’s really only four ways to do it…
One, you can always work more hours. That always goes down really well if you have a family or are not as young as you once were.
Two, you can work faster. You could invest in a truck-mount with a large van at a cost of thousands.
Three, you could duplicate yourself by hiring employees. However, if you think that parenting children is hard enough, wait until you parent employees!
Or you could do number Four…
Charge More!
